Annual cat and dog licences will no longer be required in Morinville
Changes to the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw will require all pets to wear visible identification tags
Morinville, Alta. - Beginning January 1, 2026, cat and dog owners in Morinville will no longer be required to purchase an annual municipal pet licence. Instead, all cats and dogs must wear a visible identification tag that clearly displays the owner’s current phone number and/or address. This amendment was approved by Council on August 26, 2025.
This updated approach streamlines requirements for residents while supporting reunification if a pet becomes lost. As part of responsible pet ownership, Morinville strongly encourages owners to have their pets microchipped, providing a permanent form of identification that cannot fall off or be removed.
“Ensuring pets have clear, accurate identification helps us return them home and reduces stress for both the animal and the owner,” said Sergeant William Norton, Supervisor, Enforcement Services. “These changes also allow us to focus on safety and education while continuing to support pet owners in our community.”
The Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw outlines expectations for cat and dog owners, including identification requirements and guidelines that help cats, dogs, owners and neighbours live together safely. Municipal cat/dog licensing and licence tags will no longer be available for purchase after December 31, 2025.
