Commemorative Naming

Commemorative Bench and Tree Program

The Commemorative Bench and Tree Program offers a way to honour or preserve the memory of special events, individuals (living or deceased), groups of individuals, and community organizations.

Options include:

  • Installation of a commemorative plaque on an existing memorial bench. The plaque is a horizontal bronze plate that will be affixed to the backrest of the designated bench. (view map of existing benches)
  • Installation of a commemorative plaque on a new memorial bench.  The plaque is a horizontal bronze plate that will be affixed to the backrest of the designated bench.
  • Installation of a commemorative plaque next to a memorial tree.  The plaque is a square bronze plate that will be mounted on a post and installed in the ground next to a memorial tree. 

Fees

A non-refundable fee of $150 is required to assess any commemorative program application. Once an application is received, you will receive an invoice which must be paid before Town staff will assess the application. 

A fee of $1700, plus the actual cost of the plaque is required to complete a Commemorative Bench application for an existing bench. (view map of existing benches)

Applicants are responsible for ensuring the plaque ordered and its subsequent inscription meets the Commemorative Bench Plaque Requirements.

A fee of $2900, plus the actual cost of the plaque is required to complete a Commemorative Bench application for any newly installed bench.  Applicants are responsible for ensuring the plaque ordered and its subsequent inscription meets the Commemorative Bench Plaque Requirements.

A fee of $800 to $1050 (dependent on the tree species selected), plus the actual cost of the plaque is required to complete a Commemorative Tree application for any newly planted tree and installed plaque.  Applicants are responsible for ensuring the plaque ordered and its subsequent inscription meets the Commemorative Tree Plaque Requirements.

In keeping with the Town of Morinville’s Municipal Open Space Standards, commemorative benches will be selected and ordered by Town Staff.  The corresponding commemorative plaque is a horizontal bronze plate that is affixed to the backrest of the designated bench.

  • Bench plaques for existing benches will be installed between May and September. (view map of existing benches)

  • New benches and accompanying plaques will be installed between July and September.

Commemorative trees will be a new stand-alone ornamental tree situated within a park. Trees planted on boulevards or existing forest or natural areas are not part of the program.

Select species of ornamental trees are eligible for this program, subject to market availability.  The final tree species selection and location is at the discretion of the Town of Morinville.  The tree plaque is a horizontal bronze plate that is mounted on an upright pedestal placed approximately 3 feet above the ground, at the border of the existing tree well. 

 Important dates

Applications for existing Commemorative Benches will be accepted between January 1 to June 30 of each calendar year.  Once an application is approved and payment is received, benches and/or bench plaques will be installed between May and September.  (view map of existing benches)

Applications for Commemorative Trees will be accepted between January 1 to June 30 of each calendar year.  Once an application is approved and payment is received, Commemorative trees will be planted and their associated plaques will be installed in September or October of each year.

Location holds

Holding a location is not permitted. All program requests will be addressed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
