Truth and Reconciliation
Land Acknowledgment
We respectfully acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 Territory, traditional lands of the Cree, Dene, Stony Nakota Sioux, Saulteaux and Ojibwe First Nations and Metis people.
The Town of Morinville is dedicated to ensuring that the spirit of Treaty 6 is honoured and respected.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR)
Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
The Town of Morinville's Leadership Team encourages all employees to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Please take some time to review the National Day for Truth Reconciliation, Indigenous culture and mental health learning opportunities and resources, found listed below.
Orange Shirt Day is also recognized on September 30 and all staff are encouraged to wear orange on this day. Orange Shirt Day was created to recognize the harm that the residential school system did to Indigenous children's sense of self-esteem and well being. To learn more about the origin of the "orange shirt" and the inspiration behind this significant day, visit Orange Shirt Day.
In recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Morinville Community Cultural Centre (MCCC) will host a special community display from September 22 to October 3.
Orange construction-paper hearts, created by youth and community members, will share messages of remembrance, care and hope for Survivors and for the children who never returned home.
We invite you to come down to the MCCC to view the display—and add your own orange heart to the wall.
