Organics and Compost
Residents with a utility account are provided with an organics cart (green) to collect food scraps and yard waste. Your organics cart material is taken to Roseridge Landfill where it is turned into garden compost.
Curbside collection requirements
Follow these instructions to ensure your organics cart is collected.
- Place your cart curbside by 7 a.m.
- Fully close the cart lid. Ensure your cart is not overflowing.
- Put your organics and yard waste directly into the cart.
- Point the arrows on top of the cart towards the road when putting the cart out.
- Ensure there is at least one metre distance from all obstacles such as fences, cars, other carts or blue bags.
- In the winter, organics can freeze in the cart. To ensure your cart is emptied we recommend:
- Loosen the frozen material up before taking the cart to the curb.
- Line the bottom of the cart with newspapers or cardboard.
- Bag your compost in biodegradable bags (make sure they are certified compostable).
- If possible store the bin in your garage.
We encourage you to practice grass cycling, leaving grass clippings on the lawn instead of bagging. This will significantly reduce yard waste and your lawn will retain moisture reducing the need for watering.
When is my collection day?
- Tuesday if you live north of 100 Avenue (Highway 642) or in South Glens
- Wednesday if you live south of 100 Avenue (Highway 642)
- Summer collection is weekly - May 1 to October 31
- Winter collection is monthly - November 1 to April 30

Cart care: cleaning and filling tips
- Do not pack grass into the cart; pressing it down tightly may prevent items from emptying during collection.
- Line your cart with newspaper to keep items from sticking or freezing to the sides of your cart.
- Put wet waste in paper towel, newspaper, paper bags or cereal boxes to avoid a mess.
- Layer wet and dry waste to help absorb excess moisture and prevent items freezing to the cart in winter.
- Use bags to collect organic waste and make sure they are certified compostable. Do not place plastic bags in your green organics cart.
- Control flies and bugs by spreading dish soap around the lip of your cart.
- Hose down your cart (inside and out) with soap, baking soda or ammonia.
